Announcement from President Stout!

 President Stout is having us send out information about today's service project out at the Stake Garden.  The corn is being picked today and is being placed at each Church building in hopes that we as Stake members will go and get some for our families.  The corn can be paid for with a tithing slip marked "other" @ 10 cents/ear.   The Stake is hoping to make enough money from the sale of the corn to ensure the planting for next year.  Please help us make this possible.  Tell your neighbors, friends, etc about the nice corn at a great price and grab some for them while you're there.  Spread the word to other members so that nothing goes to waste.  Thank you for your help with this.

August Relief Society Activity

Hopefully everyone has been enjoying their summer vacations!  Our Relief Society Quarterly activity is right around the corner!!  Here are the details:

Service Exchange & Dinner

Thursday, August 12th

Sign-ups for food will be going around this Sunday.

For the Service Auction, please bring 1 wrapped service gift.  It can be an actual item, or a note telling a service that you will do in the near future (no longer than a month). Some examples are:  babysitting, lessons (piano, dance, etc.), homemade baked goods (bread, cookies), dinner, yard care, quilts.  We have such a talented branch that the options are endless. Just be sure to wrap what you bring.  We will be exchanging like a white elephant exchange.  I can't wait to see what awesome items show up - it will be a lot of fun!

Also, for those who have bumper crop gardens this year, we would like to have a "Farmer's Market" that night as well so that you can share the wealth.  We will send a sign up around to see who thinks they will have items to add to our market.

Emergency Preparedness Fair Blood Drive

Back to School Potluck!

School's almost back in session and summer is winding down. Join us for a Back to School Potluck on Saturday, Aug 21st, 6:00pm, at the Park Springs Park in Bentonville. If your last name starts with A-L, please bring sides or dessert to share. If your last name starts with M-W, please bring a main dish to share. Each family needs to bring their own paper products. Drinks and games will be provided.

Roger's Stake Employment Workshop Day

We have been taught to be prepared in all things. Are you prepared to support yourself or your family now?

The Church Employment Specialists from Dallas and Tulsa will present several different workshops to help us be prepared to handle the days ahead in the job market.

Second Batch of Corn is ready

The next batch of corn is ready!! This week will be prime picking time. It is fresh and delicious.  There is so much corn and some has already gone bad.....we hope that you can encourage families and sisters to come and pick and bring friends and neighbors....it is such a shame to see it go bad in the field after all the time, money and effort that has gone in to growing it.  Suggested donation is 10 cents an ear...but the biggest issue is we don't want it to go to waste.  Below is a recipe for putting it in the freezer.  If anyone has questions they can call me at 640-4467.   Frozen Corn cut off the Cob Ingredients: 8 Cups of corn cut off the cob 1 Cup Water 1 cube(1/2 cup) of butter (I like real butter) 2 TBS Sugar 1 tsp salt Directions: Clean and wash corn well. Remove all extra hair.   Cut kernels off cob. DO NOT BLANCHE FIRST (Hint: Try an electric knife, or tool from Bed bath and beyond) Put all ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil Boil for 1 min. Cool and put into freezer bags. And freeze. When ready to eat..Microwave and enjoy! Number Of Servings:4 bags of 2 cups each.

Women's Broadcast Choir

 

Dear Sisters of Rogers Stake,

 

This fall on September 25th will be our next Stake Relief Society Social and General Relief Society Broadcast. We will start the evening with dinner.  Next, we'll enjoy a special program of choral music (sung by sisters from our stake) and then watch the broadcast from Salt Lake City together. 

 

This is an invitation for all sisters in Rogers Stake who like to sing to be part of this chorus. Anyone willing to learn, work hard, and share their musical talents is welcome to join. Sister Jo Evans will be the director.  She has chosen 4 or 5 beautiful songs for us to learn including "May I Serve Thee" from last year's Multi-Stake Women's Conference.  The timeline to learn the music will be short. Two practises a week are planned: one on Wednesday mornings at 9 am and, also, on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm. You will be expected to attend at least one of these per week or both if you can.  We hope this will accommodate everyone's needs, timewise.  Practises will last at least 90 minutes each time.

 

Our first meeting will be Wednesday, August 4th at 9 am at the stake center and then again that evening (the only Wednesday) at 7:30 pm.  Everyone will receive their music at this time and hear the pieces. Hopefully, this will give every chorus member time to learn her part before our first full rehearsal on Wednesday morning, August 25th, at 9 am followed by a second full rehearsal on Thursday, August 26th, 7:30pm.  As we get close to September 25th, a Saturday or Sunday rehearsal could be added. All practises will be at the stake center.

Lindsey Baby is Here!

Baby Lindsey is here! He is 8 lbs. 12 ozs., 19 1/2 inches long.  They haven't decided on the name yet.  Alisha and baby are doing great!  

Family Home Evening Groups

In an effort to get to know our branch family better, the Activities Committee is organizing some Family Home Evening Groups.  If you would like to participate, you will be placed into a group with 2-3 other families and will get together once during the quarter to have some fun and become better acquainted in the process. To help you get to know even more families, new groups will be assigned each quarter.

Todd and Angela had their baby this morning at 10:42 am. He couldn't wait 2 weeks to come on his due date :).

  This is your friendly reminder about play group tomorrow!  We are going to go to the Fayetteville Public Library story time at 10:30 AM.  I know it's far, but it sounds really fun!  It's an hour long, so that's quite a bit longer than the one in Bentonville, and we love books!  The address is 401 W. Mountain St. in Fayetteville, and it's in the Walmart Reading Room. 
  Next Friday we're headed to the Rogers Splash Park at 10:30 AM!

Stake Corn Harvest is Ready

The harvest of corn is ready!!!

The Stake Farm is producing corn ready for consumption.  Those interested in picking corn for their use are welcome to come to the stake farm and pick what they need.  It is on the honor system and is 10 cents an ear. Once you have picked what you need, fill out a tithing slip in your unit and mark other (stake farm corn) and place the appropriate amount of money in the donation slip and give it to a member in the bishopric as you would any other type of donation.

Some changes: Cleaning the church in July

Anyone who signed up to clean the church in the month of July is off the hook!  We had some confusion with the scheduling, and so the ward will be cleaning it this month.  Sorry for the change in plans, but thanks for volunteering!

We will be discussing Prisoner of Tehran: One Woman's Story of Survival Inside an Iranian Prison by Marina Nemat. We will meet at 8:30 pm on Thursday, August 5th at Cori Graham's house. Leslee Lai will lead the discussion.

Summary of the book:

In Tehran in the early 1980s, after she leads a strike in high school to get her math teacher to teach calculus not politics, Marina, 16, a practicing Catholic, is locked up for two years and tortured with her school friends in the Ayatollah Khomeini's notorious Evin political prison. She is saved from execution by an interrogator, Ali, who wants to marry her and threatens to hurt her family and Catholic boyfriend, Andre, if she refuses. Forced to convert to Islam, she becomes Ali's wife; then he is assassinated by political rivals, and she rejoins her family and marries Andre. They immigrate to Canada in 1991. For more than 20 years, secure in her middle-class life, she keeps silent, until she writes this unforgettable memoir. Haunted by her lost friends and by her betrayal of them, Nemat tells her story without messages and with no sense of heroism. The quiet, direct narrative moves back and forth from Toronto to Nemat's childhood under the shah's brutal regime and, later, during the terror under Khomeini. Despite the rabid politics and terrifying drama, the most memorable aspect of the story is the portrait of Ali, Nemat's savior, in love with her, so kind to her--Does he kill people when he goes off to work in the prison each day?

Hey Fellow Mamas,

  Sorry I didn't email last week.  I just kind of figured with the holiday and stuff, everyone would be busy!  But we are itching to play this week! 
  It's looking like yucky weather on Friday, unfortunately, so I thought we could just meet at Barnes & Noble and let the kiddies play at the train table and read books (it's a spot my last play group used pretty often).  We can chat--anyone had a Starbucks blended creme (no coffee!)?  Yum, yum!  Hope to see you there at 10:30!

Pool Party Follow-up

We wanted to let you know that while we were hoping to reschedule the pool party, the reamining couple of dates available at the pool (mostly Sundays) will not work out for us.  So sadly, we will NOT be able to reschedule the pool party.
